Cultural Roots

The Aboriginal Australians are considered the oldest culture on earth with a history that dates back to over 50,000 years. After thousands of years of trial and error, they developed a sophisticated understanding of native plants. Many of these offered anti-oxidant, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-viral benefits and the Aborigines used them in bush medicine for cleansing and treating cuts, wounds and various skin conditions.

The Aborigines used lemon myrtle leaves as flavoring and as a natural antiseptic paste for the skin. Studies have found that it’s a very powerful antioxidant and cleanser, high in Citral, containing nutrients, essential minerals and anti-aging Vitamins A & E. It is shown to balance the skins sebum production, help prevent acne, and minimize the appearance of pores. Lemon myrtle is also considered antiseptic, anti-fungal, anti-viral, anti-bacterial, and rich in phenolic compounds, folate and lutein, which promote hydration, elasticity, lipid or fat content, and could also prevent oxidative damage to the skin.

Kakadu Plum is the world’s highest natural source of Vitamin C, a powerful antioxidant that fights free radicals and brightens and increases collagen production. This native bush fruit was a major source of food for Aborigines tribes containing a good source of iron, Vitamin E and folate, and also used medicinally for it's anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-viral and anti-inflammatory benefits. Studies show that the fruit contains gallic acid, which helps restore the skin’s natural barrier, and ellagic acid, which also improves skin elasticity and prevents acne.

Furthermore, our base oil of macadamia contains a perfect ratio of essential fatty acids, the closest match to naturally occurring sebum of the skin. The macadamia tree is an indigenous species to Australia and is over 60,000 years old. Macadamia nut was an important part of the Aboriginal diet and the oil was used cosmetically, as a base for face and body paint. Macadamia oil contains squalene and oleic acid that assists with cell regeneration, omega 7 or palmitoleic acid which is beneficial for wound healing, scratches and burns, phytosterols that assist with itchiness and redness, and is highly emollient yet light penetrating. Blended with other deep cleansing and anti-inflammatory indigenous tree extracts, our Aboriginal Clarifying Cleansing Oil will help normalize oily skin, clear acne and refine the skins texture while delivering nourishment for a healthy complexion.

Reviews Ingredients Frequently Asked Questions

"I’ve been using this cleansing oil and serum (Native Restore Serum) for about a month now and they have blown me away. I’m a huge fan of cleansing oils and this is at the top of that list. With Lemon Myrtle and Kakadu plum this cleansing oil is a sensory experience on its own. It’s feels slick on the skin and gets every last bit of makeup off. I feel like my skin has been far less congested since using this. Lemon myrtle has been known to be a powerful antioxidant for the skin and kakadu plum is the worlds highest natural source of vitamin C, making this cleansing oil perfect for all skin types. I’ve noticed also a decrease in my hyper-pigmentation, but I have other products to thank for that as well.... I didn't use the cleansing oil for the first time one night and woke up with 3 new friends. Love these products!" ~ Starr (@skinbystarr)

“This was my first time using a cleansing oil and I cannot go back to using a soap-based cleanser again. I’m 62 and honestly wish I had used such a high quality oil cleanser with this type of ingredient base since my teens! I’ve seen such a difference in the past couple of months and I love the ritual of massaging the nutrient-rich oils on my skin and wiping with a hot, damp cloth. The scent is refreshing and clean, adding to the experience. So happy to have found this!” ~ Nina Z.

"Personally, I love oils over balms to take off my makeup and this one is great! It has extracts of Kakadu Plum in it, which is natures highest source of Vitamin C. I have used this one on days where I have barely any makeup on and it took everything off without having to press too hard into the skin or rub harshly. I have also used this on a day where I have a full face of makeup plastered on and it melted off like butter. It was astounding! Not to mention that is has a bright citrusy scent which is my all time favorite for skincare!" ~Sydney H. (@sydneys.lipstick.diary)

"Let’s begin with the first, and debatably the most important steps of the skincare routine. After many hours in Fondren or a long night at Homebar, taking off your makeup is likely the last thing you are thinking about. But, thoroughly removing your makeup is the best way to ensure clear skin and prevent clogged pores. I LOVE the Gypsy Secrets Cleansing Oil because it completely breaks down foundation, cream eyeshadows and most importantly, even waterproof mascara. Double cleansing might seem like a hassle, but if you have a full face of makeup on, I guarantee it’s worth the two extra minutes. This product is formulated with Kakadu Plum, nature’s highest source of Vitamin C, which promotes vibrancy and radiance. Additionally, lemon myrtle, a natural antiseptic, helps balance sebum production." ~Lauren F. (SMU Style)

"I have been using the Aboriginal Clarifying Cleanser to wash my face morning and evening. The texture of this cleanser is so silky smooth. It melts right into the skin, and removes makeup, dirt and impure oils from the skin, leaving the skin feeling refreshed and renewed. I tend to run oily, so at first the thought of using an oil cleanser to cleanse my face was terrifying, but I promise you it’s actually much better than using a gel or oil-free cleanser. When we over-purify our skin from our natural oils it reacts as if something is attacking it. It then sends a message to our body to make more oil. When in reality oil + oil = balance. That’s why our dermatologists and estheticians tell us to only use a scrub 1-2 times per week. This cleanser is excellent for all skin types though! It has Kakadu Plum which is natures highest source of Vitamin C, it helps brighten the skin and boost your collagen (who doesn’t need want an extra collagen boost?!) The Australian Macadamia oil is used to help clarify the skin. The lemon myrtle is a natural antiseptic, and is high in Vitamin A & E. I highly recommend giving this phenomenal cleanser a try! I would say 1-2 pumps is all you need for your entire face, massage into the skin until theres a slip then press a warm towel against the skin to activate the oils and remove the cleanser." ~Sarah L. (@gypsychildofthewild)

"I use about 3-4 drops of this cleansing oil. I massage it on my face for a little of bit (I like the sensation, so I give myself a little massage) and then I wet a cloth, and I wipe away the oil. It’s good at removing my makeup, but I must say it's not the best at removing eye makeup, I always have a hard time with it and I usually have to remove my eye makeup before because it doesn’t get rid of all of it. Besides that, I really like this oil. After I removed the excess oil with a semi-hot cloth, my skin feels super plump and glowing, it doesn’t strip my skin. Overall, I really love both products (along with the Native Restore Serum), but I prefer the serum. I must say that my favorite is the serum since I clearly see results faster. I'm glad (this brand reached out to me) because they've been a game changer." ~Skarlet (@thatkindaface)

"First off, the packaging. Its a beautiful, black as night, heavy glass. It looks and feels luxurious and expensive (both are true). The cleansing oil stars lemon myrtle and kakadu plum (a super powerful vitamin C). You pump out a few squirts and massage it over the skin for a minute and apply a hot cloth on the face and steam the skin for a minute then gently wipe away. It leaves my skin glowing, plump, but importantly, balanced, clean and not stripped. It's absolutely lovely. ~Becca C. (@honeyandhighlighter)

“When I use this, I feel like Cleopatra washing my face with the most divine ingredients from ancient, organic, botanically infused gold! It is beyond lavish! The information that Gypsy Secrets supplies on their website about Cultural Roots and Ancient Cultures is an amazing read! I highly encourage you to read about it and learn about the mystical and holistic powers of ingredients that have been passed down from generation to generation.Thank you so much @gypsysecrets for this magnificent Cleansing Oil!" ~ Alexandria J. (@alexandriajofficial )

"This is a super gentle cleansing oil that clarifies and calms. This has the most beautiful citrus scent that is so uplifting and is best removed with a warm, damp clot. It leaves my skin so soft and rejuvenated. I love, love, love this cleanser. Works quite well on my skin." ~ Jennifer I. (@the.cali.glow)

"This cleansing oil is incredible! If you haven't tried cleansing oils you need to try this one!" ~Dayna G (@daynawithoutrules)

"This oil cleanser is so gentle, yet effective in removing makeup. I really feel that is is helping to improve the overall texture of my skin. I apply a few pumps to my face and neck, massage in circular motions, and wipe away with a steamed cloth. Absolutely beautiful." ~Cierra Taylor (@laviedefawn)

"This product retails for $70.00 and while that may seem like a lot, it is a luxury brand and it is all the way worth it. I usually am not a huge fan of oil cleansers, but I love this one. It’s lightweight and doesn’t feel like a messy oil. It’s made to refresh, balance and clarify and it has lemon myrtle and kakadu plum. The formula is made to remove dirt, makeup and oils from the skin". ~(@venusrisingblog)

"I wanted/needed something new with my bedtime ritual. My skin is very much a combination of oily, dry and somewhat sensitive. Being in my late 40s I felt I needed to start taking better care of my skin. I tried this cleansing oil because it is as close to an all natural product without me having to make it! I use it at night because it gently removes the daily buildup from my skin without stripping or dry my skin like most cleansers. I have darker skin and even though it can be oily I need a product that is not harsh to my skin and I choose to purchase chemical free, non-toxic products. In addition the aromatherapy within this product is so therapeutic I look forward now to cleansing my skin." ~ Melita M. (@mitchellmelita)

"Lemon Myrtle is an extremely powerful cleanser that can be very harsh on the skin but if were to be combined with a carrier oil, it becomes very gentle. And that's where Kakadu Plum comes into play. It is rich in antioxidants with a very high level of vitamin C. Who doesn't love Vitamin C!? This oil cleanser is super light but not watery so it will not drip and make a mess. Which means you'll need more than a pump to cleanse the entire face. It's so potent, I love it!" ~ Monita S. (@skinandvino)

Can I use the Aboriginal Clarifying Cleansing Oil as a face oil?

This combination of clarifying Australian herbs and extracts are very nourishing for the skin but the macadamia oil base is a bit heavier than our Native Restore Serum face oil part of the ritual. If you feel like you need the extra hydration, in addition to the potency of the deep cleansing plants, leave it on for a while in the evening and then wipe off. The citral content in lemon myrtle might cause photo-sensitivity if left on during the day. We advise the prioritization of the Native Restore Serum for a balancing leave on treatment- or the Amazonian Repair Balm, for deeper hydration.
